Core Concepts
Key definitions
-
Following
The accounts you follow right now. This is your current outgoing list — it changes whenever you follow or unfollow someone.
-
Followers
The accounts that follow you right now (incoming). Instagram shows this count, but not who dropped off over time.
-
Unfollowers
People who used to follow you but don't now. You find them by comparing two exports (Snapshots) — "then" vs "now."
So "Following" is a current-state list. "Unfollowers" is a change over time — you can only see it by comparing two points in time.
Why the numbers don't match
- Different directions: "Following" is who you follow; "Unfollowers" is who stopped following you
- Different timeframes: Following = now. Unfollowers = then vs now
- Renamed accounts and brief deactivations can shift counts slightly
How we calculate it (safely)
- Export your official Instagram data (JSON) — no passwords
- Create a Snapshot on your first upload (your "then")
- Upload again later and we reveal unfollowers instantly

Follow-back ratio — quick sanity check
Your follow-back ratio helps spot low-value follows. If you follow 2,000 accounts but only 500 follow back, your ratio is 25%. Cleanups target the biggest gaps first.
- High ratio (strong): your follows mostly follow back — good reciprocity
- Low ratio (noisy): you follow many who don't follow back — consider pruning
DFB highlights "doesn't follow back" and lets you move accounts to Ignored, Watchlist, or Deactivated to keep your list tidy over time.
Common misconceptions
- "Unfollowers should equal my following count" — they measure different things
- "I can track this live" — Instagram doesn't push real-time unfollows; comparing exports is the reliable method
- "I need to log in here" — you don't; we never ask for your password
Best practices
- Export only "Followers and Following" for a small, fast file
- Create a Snapshot right away, then compare weekly or monthly
- Use lists (Ignored / Watchlist / Deactivated) to reduce noise over time

FAQ
Is this safe?
Yes. You use your official Instagram export (JSON). We never ask for your password, and processing happens in-memory — files are discarded immediately after analysis.
Why do I need a Snapshot?
It locks in your "then." On your next upload ("now"), we compare the two and reveal who unfollowed in that period. Without a Snapshot, there's nothing to compare against.
Why might counts shift slightly?
Handle renames, deactivations, and temporary account pauses can all affect the lists. We use timestamps and smart matching to minimize mismatches.
How much does it cost?
Preview is free. A one-time $3 unlock reveals all names and full details. No subscription, no recurring charges.
